THE WAR IN HEAVEN: THE FALL OF ANGELS

The Bible tells us that heaven was a place of peace until one of the highest and most beautiful angels rebelled. The prophet Ezekiel describes this angel, Lucifer, as an anointed _______________ who covered (Ezekiel 28:14). He was _______________ , or blameless, in his ways when he was created (Ezekiel 28:15). So how did this perfect angel become the devil? First, in order to understand what a “covering cherub” is, we must also have an under standing of a very special building that God had instructed _______________ to make, called the _______________ (Hebrews 8:5). This structure served as a shadow, or miniature model, of the _______________ , and of the _______________ tabernacle-God’s dwelling place in heaven (Hebrews 8:2).                  

Inside this tabernacle was a golden furnishing called the mercy _______________ (Exodus 25:17). It was a symbol of God’s throne in heaven. The apostle Paul referred to this seat when he wrote that by faith, people are invited to “come _______________ unto the _______________ of _______________ ,  that we may obtain _______________ and find _______________ to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). Beneath this seat was a golden box called the _______________, inside of which Moses was to place the _______________ that God would give him (Exodus 25:21).

Moses was commanded to make two inanimate cherubs, or angels, one for each side of the mercy seat, which covered the ark (Exodus 25:19). These two angels were depicted as “ _______________ the mercy seat” with their _______________ (Exodus 25:20). From this we know that a covering cherub is an angel who stands closest to the throne of God. This was Lucifer’s position.

As such, Lucifer was privileged to walk back and forth in the _______________ of the _______________(Ezekiel 28:14). What were these special stones found at the feet of the covering cherub? The golden ark, which was considered to be God’s “footstool.” The Bible records these words of King David who, thousands of years after Moses, desired to build a permanent temple for God in Jerusalem. “King David rose to his feet and said, ‘Hear me, my brethren and my people: I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and for the footstool of our God, and had made preparations to build it” (1 Chronicles 28:2). That this golden ark was God’s footstool is further evidenced in the book of Psalms, which records, “The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble! He _______________ between the _______________ ; let the earth be moved. Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at His _______________-He is holy” (Psalm 99:1-5). “Let us go into His _______________ ; let us worship at His _______________ ” (Psalm 132:7). If the golden mercy seat is where God sat, we can know that the golden ark upon which it rested was indeed His footstool.

Prominent  Presbyterian theologian Albert Barnes, in His Notes on the Bible, writes, “David views the ark as God’s ‘footstool,’ because [He] was enthroned  above it visibly in the Shechinah, or luminous cloud, present from time to time above the mercy seat and between the cherubim.”

Resting on the floor within this footstool, or ark, was the law, or “testimony,” written by God on tablets of _______________ (Exodus 24:12). When God called Moses up on Mount Sinai to receive this law, Moses saw that under God’s feet was a paved _______________ of _______________ (Exodus 24:10). The Bible records, “The sight of the _______________ of the Lord was like a _______________ (Exodus 24:17).

This law found at the foot of God’s throne was summarized by a single word in the New Testament:_______________ (Romans 13:10). The principle of love is the rule of heaven. The Bible tells us that love is as _______________ of _______________ that has a most vehement _______________ , which many waters cannot _______________ (Song of Solomon 8:6, 7). This is why Moses, in describing God’s law, wrote, “The Lord came from Sinai with ten thousands of saints; from His _______________ came a

_______________ law for them” (Deuteronomy 33:2). God’s law written in fire, upon burning stones, symbolized the unquenchable fire of His love.

Hence these stones, upon which were written God’s “fiery law of love,” were very likely the stones of fire that Lucifer once “walked back and forth” among (Ezekiel 28:14). Indeed, he had been in the very bosom of God’s love, and he knew it well.

As a covering cherub, Lucifer’s responsibility was to cover, protect, and show the holiness of God’s law, the foundation of peace in heaven. But the Bible tells us that _______________ was found in this angel (Ezekiel 28:15). Iniquity—another word for sin—is also described as _______________ of God’s law (1 John 3:4). Hence, the very law this covering cherub was to revere, the very principle of love he once rejoiced in, he had now turned against.

It was Lucifer’s rebellion against this law of love, his “sin,” that ultimately led to his downfall. But Lucifer was also able to convince many of the angels in heaven to rebel with him against God’s law. How did he accomplish this? 

The Bible tells us of this covering angel, “You have defiled your sanctuaries by the_______________ of your_______________, by the iniquity of your _______________ ” (Ezekiel 28:18). By the abundance of his _______________ , the angel had become filled with violence (Ezekiel 28:16). Lucifer was trafficking, or merchandising, a deception among the angels. He had not only turned against the law of God, he also said in his _______________ that he would exalt his throne above the stars of God and that he would _______________ the Most High (Isaiah 14:12–14). The Bible says that the Most High is righteous, pure, and holy. Lucifer, then, was claiming that he could be holy like God without the need to obey God’s law! His argument, his “merchandise,” to the angels was not an outward appeal to be evil, but rather a simple yet deceptive message that they didn’t need to obey God in order to be holy like God. Each angel could choose to do his own will, follow his own inclinations, and still be righteous without the law. It was an argument of self-righteousness.......
